Fly the rough (I mean rouge) skies of Canada

Naming Canadian new products, branding products in CanadaOK folks, some of you may be very fluent with French words or used to putting rouge something or other on your face. But for the less educated in worldly languages, and for those of us who speed read, do you really want to fly an airline that looks rough, or maybe even a rogue?

Will everyone know it is pronounced roooge and not a rhyming word with gouge?  Isn’t English fun? Will Canadians take to having their sacred red maple leaf flag and logo in a new shade?
I still meet a lot of people who don’t know that Montreal is the second biggest French speaking city in the world. But even I didn’t stop to think that Montreal is the Canadian airline capital. But so what? One hour after take off and they are out of French Canadian airspace!

naming german products, german product branding servicesI am told by reliable sources that chicken wings are often called Buffalo wings in the USA because they were invented in Buffalo New York.  Only took me about 20 years to learn this basic fact! So now will they be served on German Wings when they are up against Rouge?

Notice: German Wings, not Deutsch Flügeln even though it may take 3 or 4 hours of flying to be outside of Deutschland airspace.

Mooskys is a Great Name for Food Snack featuring Mickey Mouse

Packaged food naming firm, snack brand naming consultant, food naming guruJust when I was thinking about new food and packaged goods names for the current season, my partner in Europe sends me the attached photo from Spain. How could I resist not rating it for a three star award. What a corny name for a corn snack product!

Since Mickey D’s is street slang for McDonalds, a different name is needed for Mickey Mouse products, and what could be better on an international branding stage than Mooskys?

The interesting point is that this product’s trademark is properly registered with the OHIM database for E.U. trademarks, but is not registered in the USA, which is obviously the home of Disney Corp whose name and characters are so prominent on the packaging. In fact, this is not a Disney product at all! It is produced and licensed by a Spanish food manufacturer – presumably with a trademark name and character licensing agreement from Disney.

Now for you students of trademarks, what if I make a meat snack product from Canadian moose meat, say, and call it Mooskys in the USA? Am I safe and clear or tempting the wrath of Mickey and Pluto’s giant legal machine?

In the meantime, the domains Mooskys.com, Mooskys.es and others are available though I am not going to go there. However, Moosky.com is listed as for sale – though some services are calling it MooSky! Does that mean or imply heavenly milk?

Elio is a great name for cool new little US car

EliocarWhen I look up Elio in Wikipedia, I get some Italian rock singer. When I look up Elio in a Google Search, most paths lead to Elio Motors, the exciting new 3 wheeler car company starting production as we speak in Louisiana.

Of course, by now I have learned that Elio is the last name of the founder, and not only some clever linguistic derivation of a three syllable word using only four letters of the alphabet. Paul Elio is taking some big hints from Elon Musk (of Tesla Motors fame), but on the other end of the automobile spectrum.

An impressive new car company deserves a great new name (done) plus a great new logo with witch to “badge” their designs. What do you think of their logo and tagline?

ElioLogo

Pretty good job I think, though if I want to be super-critical I could say the color scheme and sharp shapes of the E give it a slight Arabic origin look – but heck, most people won’t analyze it that carefully. Also, lots of what they say imply a “green” car, though they never come out and say that since it is a conventional gas powered car – albeit one that can go 600+miles on a 8 gallon tankful.

Stay tuned to see what model names (hopefully) rather than numbers they assign their first cute little family of three-wheelers.

Having a Cadenza over the name

When one of the kids in my family were getting stirred up, my mother often used to say “Now son, don’t have a cadenza.” So I did a double take when I saw the commercials for the new KIA luxury sedan. Did they really call it Cadenza?

CadenzaLogoWell yes, they did, so I looked up Cadenza in the dictionary and found all the musical usages. Then I read the urban slang dictionary – which looked like they were quoting my mother!

Usually KIA does a great job of giving good, practical, unique names to their various models, but this time something got missed in Korea. Perhaps it doesn’t matter except to a handful of people and the rest will see it as an elegant name to go with a classy, affordable sedan.

Crazy Casino Names

ChuckchansiLogoWill you go gamble in a local Indian casino if you can’t pronounce the name over the entrance? Of course you will.

In fact a real Indian name might even might add a nice touch of aura or mystique. Where do you feel you will be more lucky or have more fun – in the Table Mountain Casino or Chukchansi? I am still trying to believe that there really is an Indian tribal name Chuckchansi, the locals fondly nickname it Chuck and Nancy’s as they put another 10 coins in the slot machine.

GratonCasinoLogoSo I am forced to conclude the big new casino in Northern California will succeed despite its awkward name that grates on my nerves. I wonder what it’s nickname will be.

Scanadu is the Great Name of the Day

ScanaduLogoAs a namiac it isn’t often I get to discover a great new name while reading the morning paper. But today is one of those days when I saw the story and instantly knew what a great name they had – one minute after I read that yet another company was making a medical device hooked to your cell phone as the compute engine (what a great development and universally available platform).
Of course, Scanadu is from Scan and Xanadu. But think of the implied Scan and Do as well. Magnificent.

Zulily is a great new name on an offensive welcome site

zulilyAfter all these years as a professional namer, and many years before that as an obsessed amateur, it is not often I find a new name style out there, but today I was surprised to read about Zulily, which is apparently a very popular site.

Firstly, if you are considering how to pronounce the name, realize that Zoolily.com also leads to Zulily.com. They also own Zululy.com but it does not go anywhere, and Zululi.com is held by some interloper from Canada who tries to catch their traffic. Luckily my faithful Ghostery ad blocking software stop their redirection of my browser.

In addition to their interesting name, the good news is they have a very specific tagline that helps position them to novices, and I am sure they are getting a lot of referral traffic, in addition to good publicity.  The bad news is I can’t tell you much more as they don’t let you view who they are and what they do without you first registering (though you can partially see the home page around their offensive sign in first box). And like anyone with online experience, you have to be nuts to join a site without first knowing what they are about – heck they could be another Romanian site collecting spam and personal data – so be very careful with any such sites.

AARP has a great new tagline

AarpLogoTaglineAs the big baby boom wave starts to hit retirement age in the USA, it is very appropriate that the biggest retirement organization (unfortunately with just another set of initials name) chooses to update its position and go for a great new tagline: Real Possibilities.

I love it when so much power is contained in so short a tagline, and always wonder how many hundreds of words and taglines they studied before coming up with the final winner. In addition, it is nice to see the writers and editors in their magazine also embracing the tagline and making numerous references to it and using it as a hook for a number of stories.

Some companies and organizations are just stuck with an old name or set of initials. A new logo doesn’t make much of a difference. But anyone can do a new tagline or slogan, and easily get it legally approved. Congratulations to AARP for showing us a great example.

Avigilon is a very awkward rotten name

avigilonLogoAs far as I can tell, Avigilon is a good company with a good hidef security product line that many retailers would love to have. But trying to be clever has made this name awkward. Why not simply Vigilon?

Leatherhead Originals is a great name for a small outfit

Sometimes it seems to me we over think all these clever company names, and then along comes a very small business that shows us how a basic, but unique name, can do the job so well.

LeatherheadOriginalsIf you are looking for a jaw dropping great affect from your friends and family at the next Medieval Faire, fancy dress or Halloween, then seriously consider a leather hat or mask (or in my case helmet) from Leatherhead Originals. Beautiful soft, lined and often recycled leather in many colors are the materials of choice for this master craftsman. Yes, quality costs money, but ignore the price, you are going to keep it forever.
Plus Josh’s tagline is simple and direct: Unique Leather Hats & Masks.

And if the name and tagline haven’t hooked you yet, see the illustration logo on his business card here. Wow. If he can make that, what can this master craftsman make for you? See a lot more of his work on Etsy now that you know his name.
